In this year’s edition, our 6G Flagship program team at the University of Oulu, Finland together with the global PIMRC community are excited to invite you to a joint expedition Towards Sustainable 6G! With the up-to-date visions of 6G and predictions of the 6G landscape , IEEE PIMRC 2021 covers beyond 5G technologies from multiple angles. Our four keynotes , six panels and ten workshops highlight timely research and development topics and predict their evolution towards 6G. Several talks and panel discussions explore fundamental theory and technology while others look at the same problem framework from the vertical application perspective. A key theme for the exploration in verticals is how we should design 6G to support the future application requirements and needs. In parallel, you can dive into challenges regarding radically new business models which are crucial for the holistic deployment of wireless systems in 2030s. We must rethink who owns and builds networks, how customers are served and by whom. These aspects, among others, are discussed in the 6G business panel. As a truly global event, IEEE PIMRC 2021 offers a great setting of papers in five technical tracks with 30 regular and one special session and authors from more than 35 countries. The contributions address the timely challenges on networking, physical layer, antennas, transceivers, and fundamental theoretical bounds relevant to 6G technology. Looking at cross-cutting themes in the technical program, machine learning and its use on different layers of 6G networks remains an important topic in several technical tracks as we have witnessed over the last few years. The use of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces and their impact on various network layers, on the other hand, can be identified as a rising theme. Thirdly, the use of mmWave and THz communications and their impact o n antennas, RF technology, physical layer, networking, and applications shaping our everyday lives in 2030s. Furthermore, our selection of 15 tutorials is a great means to dive deeper into your specific topics of interest, whether you are a researcher or a more business-oriented practitioner. The tutorials cover different aspects of machine learning for wireless networks, 5G/6G technology and evolution, fundamental technologies, and theoretical foundations, as well as several vertical applications and use cases. We are certain that with the 6G oriented topics and themes, you will gain an excellent overview of the current state of the art, challenges, limitations, possibilities, and expected evolution of 5G technologies – and great value for your time! With the continuing uncertainty due to COVID-19, IEEE PIMRC 2021 is organized as a virtual event.
